Member Spotlight - Lyndon O'Neil

𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐔𝐒𝐋𝐒𝐂 ⁣

Secured my Bronze in 1984, competed with Penguin and Devonport for a number of seasons due to athlete availability, or lack of. Surf Boats. ⁣

𝐁𝐢𝐨 ⁣

Introduced to club by my cousin when about 15 yrs old. Junior boat crew, supervised by Binni and a couple others. Soon after, broke my wrist on my motorcycle. Came back a few years later, mentored by Jim MacDonald. Fell deeply in love with sls, rowing, beach events, clubby life. ⁣

Quickly became a big part of my life, lifesaver, socially, surf sports, lifestyle, big community family, no dramas. Many memorable people, moments and achievements. Lifesaving, first aid and response at the core. Developed Elite levels of fitness and strength, mixed it up with Australian and world class athletes and competition, from state to national levels. Achieved podiums at state and National levels, beach, boats, and IRB. Always alongside fellow club and state members. Crazy times had, on and off the beach, so many great people. Sad times, exciting times, other vaguely remembered times of deep but harmless craziness. Memorable moments include rowing into Australian quarter finals with Jim, then the Semi Finals the following year with Jim. Australian Medalists in IRB racing in the biggest waves I’ve ever witnessed, bells beach area, with Goughy and others. Australian medalist in beach flags, I remember laying on the start line, knowing this would likely be the last Aussies for Binni, he was watching, there was no way I would not allow him to witness Ulverstone take a Podium, my only regret is that it wasn’t Gold. Rowing in Australian Open Boat Final, coached by Brett and Swept by Gavin. I still remember every stroke and every wave of that race, very unlucky to not have podium, 4th I think, much controversy. I recall being crowned the arm-wrestling champion of the Aussies Boaties after party, can’t recall what year that was, Mick Bonney might though. A full treasure chest of similar memories that are probably best to be kept for another time. ⁣

Fast forward… going through it all over again, this time with my sons, and other legends of the past, like Juppy. So many memories, I wouldn’t change it for the world. ⁣

𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥? ⁣

⁣The ocean. ⁣

𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭? ⁣

⁣I love all facets of surf sports. Specialised in Boats and Beach. But now enjoy the challenge of mastering other disciplines. If I can lineup and finish, hopefully catch a few runners, it’s a great day. Today my favourites are ski and flags. ⁣

𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐭𝐨 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫? ⁣

Volunteering is about community, satisfaction, self-worth, respect and wellbeing. ⁣

𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐥𝐮𝐛 - 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝? ⁣

I’ve held positions over the years including Board of Directors, surf sports, junior/nippers, surf boat, first aid, Powercraft/IRB and a few others. I can assist with transfer of knowledge and experience from my own journey, learnings, and observations, just as others passed on to me. ⁣

𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐔𝐒𝐋𝐒𝐂? 

It belongs to our #Community, for all and any member to safely access, respect, learn, share, and value. While serving the community, by providing a safe environment both in and out of the waters. A wholesome and safe environment for our young and our not so young members. ⁣

⁣𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐔𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬? ⁣

It’s a complex question. Reality is that USLSC has hosted some of the biggest and best carnivals I’ve witnessed in Tasmania. ⁣

The unique nature of our beach and waters can require a unique approach for a successful carnival. Think outside the box, focus on our unique features as strengths, therefore people will travel to experience what they don’t get at other beaches. ⁣
