Under 11’s at Somerset

A full Ulverstone contingent of 5 boys and 7 girls  participated in the under 11 age group at theSomerset Carnival. For Max Green and Gabby Gretton it was their first carnival while Ben Williams has recently changed clubs from Clifton Beach to join us. In the flags, Hayley Marshall, Emily Lewis, Holly Brown and Maddie Hayward all bowed out early to leave 3 girls in the final. Lara Emmett made 8th, Keilee Lynd 5th and Gabby Gretton 4th. The boys flags also saw 3 through in to the finals after Max and Samuel exited in the heats. Austin Porter finished 8th and Josh Reyenga and Ben Williams battled for the top two places with Josh just edging Ben out for a win. In the beach sprints Hayley made the finals. The boys finals saw Max, Josh and Ben line up with Ben 1st, Max 3rd and Josh 4th. Our boys relay team of Ben, Josh, Max and Samuel came 1st. Our mixed team of Austin, Emily, Holly and Gabby came 6th. In the girls relay Keilee, Lara, Maddie and Hayley also came 1st. The great results continued in the water events. Individual swim results were: Samuel 1st, Austin 5th, Max 7th and Josh 18th; Keilee 2nd , Maddie 3rd, Lara 6th, Holly 11th. Both our boys and girls achieved first placings for the teams points in the swim (we finally have enough boys to do this). Moving onto the boards saw Josh zoom around for a 3rd placing. Austin and Samuel crossed the line together in 7th while Max just missed out on a place in the final. Four girls made the final with Maddie continuing her good form into 3rd placing and Keilee and Lara a very close 6th and 7th. Gabby persevered but finished out of the placings. With the daylight fading only 3 competitors attempted the Iron Man. Samuel swam strongly to come out of the water well ahead of the other boys only to be overtaken on the board leg. He produced a gutsy 4th placing. Maddie and Keilee continued their strong form with a 2nd and 3rd placing. - Helen Emmett

Junior Statewide Carnival - Carlton Park

Carnival Report, Carlton Park 9th January 2010: Some great results were recorded from the Junior carnival at Carlton Park, the first official point-scoring event for the year. (Under 10's/11's report below with other information to be uploaded as soon as available.) Don't forget to check out the related carlton photos in the Nipper Gallery section.

Our Under 8 girl’s got the team off to a great start with wins in the Beach, Foamie and Swim Wade relays, with a second combined team also finishing 3rd in the Swim/Wade event. In individual races, Elka Best and Ashya Rodman shone on the sand with Elka winning Flag and Sprint events and Ashya coming 3rd in the Flags. Elka also notched a pair of 2nds in both her water events.

Success for the Under 9s in team events as well, with a 2nd in the Foamie relay and a 3rd in the Swim/Wade relay. While Meg Knowles was our only individual winner, in the Swim event, everyone competed enthusiastically and gave lots of support to their team-mates.

Once again our Under 10’s have done a superb job in challenging conditions. We were represented by Ewan Bryer, Meggan Booth, Shaeli Rodman, Madelaine White, Luc Redman, William Cleaver, Lily Knowles and Sam Watson. Some of the highlights were: William Cleaver 1st in the Sprint, Swim and Board Race, Shalei Rodman 1st in both the Sprint and Beach Flags and Lily Knowles 2nd in three events, Swim, Board Race and Beach Sprint. Our boys did very well in the team events winning the Board Relay and coming second in the Beach Relay. Our girls won the Surf & Teams and Beach Relay, but were disqualified in the latter due to some "dodgy" changeovers – an area to work on for the Somerset carnival! A special mention to Ewan Bryer for his improved performances this year – keep up the great work.

This carnival for our Under 11’s featured their first full-distance Swim and Board Races, providing a double challenge, considering the extremely difficult conditions and Arctic wind-chill factor! It did not deter our team however and Sam Burk was fantastic in winning the Swim, placing 4th in the Iron person, 7th on the Board and adding a 3rd place in the Beach Flags. He then went on to win the Board Rescue, teaming with Josh Reyenga who also recorded 5ths in the Iron Man and Board as well as winning the Beach Flags and making the final of the Beach Sprint. In the team’s events, the boys added Holly Brown and Lachie Bonney, (from Penguin) and scored a great win in the Beach Relay. Five of our girls braved the conditions with Keilee Lynd, Madison Hayward, Lara Emmett, Holly Brown and Emily Lewis all fine contributors. Maddie had a wonderful day with a 2nd in the Iron Person and Swim, 1st with Keilee in the Board Rescue, 4th in the Board and a member of the winning girls Surf & Teams combination with all 5 girls swimming extremely well and denying arch-rivals Carlton Park a victory. Keilee also had some great individual results with a 3rd in the Swim and 5ths in both the Board and Iron Person. She was also our best placed in the Beach Flags. The girl’s team were also 3rd in the Beach Relay but were actually the first all-female team to cross the line.

The Under 12 Boy’s took out their Beach Relay and Surf & Teams event and also came 3rd in the Board Relay while Board Rescue combination Jimmy Thompson and Jesse Purton grabbed 2nd place. Jack Wood narrowly took out the Beach Sprint event from brother Nick, while the order was reversed in the Beach Flags with Nick 2nd and Jack 3rd. Jamie Watson added to our points tally with a 3rd in the Board Race while Jesse Purton capped a great day with 3rds in both the Swim and the Iron person. It was one-way traffic in the girl’s events with budding star Holli Best winning all three of her water events, the Swim, Board and Iron Person, while on the sand, Amber Spinks ran extremely well and grabbed 3rd place.

There is some great rivalry among all age divisions and Isobel Horniblow renewed hostilities with Burnie competitor Dayna Challis in Under 13 ranks. Isobel won the Surf Swim and Iron Person and finished 2 nd to Dayna in the Board Race, while Bonnie Purton also chipped in with a 2 nd in the Swim. The girls also took out the Board Relay and Isobel teamed with Eva Kline to win the Board Rescue. In the male events, Andrew Watson registered a pair of 2nds in the Iron Person and the Board and Toby Reyenga managed an excellent 3 rd in the Beach Sprint. The two combined later in the day to place 3rd in the Board Rescue.

The Under 14's first real hit out for the season at Carlton Park produced some great results in typical windy Carlton conditions. Training has certainly assisted this group’s strength in both swimming and board events. Hamish Brown and Kade Lynd competed strongly in the Surf Race placing 2 nd and 3 rd respectively and following that with 6 th and 5 th in the craft event. They both also had strong finishes in the Iron Man. They took their good form onto the sand, with Kade 2nd and Hamish th in the Beach Flags. Hannah Best, Josie Thompson and Maddison Murdoch all competed strongly in the girl’s water events. Hannah finished 2nd in the Swim and 3rd in both the Board and Iron Person. Maddison finished 3rd in the Beach Flags and 4th in the Sprint, demonstrating her prowess on the beach. Josie finished a strong 5th in both the Swim and Iron Person. The result of the day however was definitely the victory in the Board Relay event, with our team of Hamish, Kade and Hannah conquering the conditions and some tangled fins to score a great win. It was a great day for this group who are looking to a very strong finish over the rest of the year.

Maddison Murdoch was also in the thick of things, coming 2nd in the Beach Sprint and 4th in the Board Race. The boys weren't to be outdone with Kade Lynd scoring 1sts in the Beach Sprint and Flags, Hamish Brown 2nd in the Board and Sprint and Oscar Dyett 2nd in the Swim and 3rd in the Sprint.

A great start to the season for the juniors and the promise of much more to come. Full results are on the link above.
