National Award:

More than 250 guests were on hand to honour Surf Life Saving’s best and bravest at the 2010 SLSA Awards of Excellence, held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre on Saturday night, 21st August and it was our own Graeme Rollins that took centre stage.

Fresh from his 2010 USLSC "Best Club Person of the Year" and his regional "Tasmanian Volunteer of the Year" Award at the Tasmanian Awards of Excellence night on the 23rd July, Rolly completed the trifecta by taking out the prestigious "Australian Volunteer of the Year" award. This extract from the SLSA webpage goes a very small way towards highlighting the contribution that Rolly has made to to our club and the lifesaving movement in general.

"In honour of his outstanding contribution to Ulverstone Surf Life Saving Club in Tasmania, Graeme Rollins took out the DHL Volunteer of the Year award. Rollins has been a key member of Ulverstone SLSC for over 26 years, and has led the advancement of education and mentoring within the club."

Surf Life Saving Australia CEO, Brett Williamson OAM, paid tribute to all the award winners on the night and the important role all surf lifesavers play in keeping our beaches safe.

“The Awards of Excellence is a great opportunity to honour those surf lifesavers, administrators, athletes, coaches and surf life saving clubs who work tirelessly to keep our beaches safe throughout the year.

“All of the winners here tonight have made a significant contribution to Surf Life Saving, whether that be at a club, state or national level. I congratulate all of them for their commitment and hard work,” said Williamson.

Tasmanian Awards:

There was double success for Ulverstone at the SLST Awards of Excellence Night held at Ulverstone on Saturday July 23rd. Graeme Rollins was a thoroughly deserving winner of the "Volunteer of the Year" award after his exceptional contribution to the club across a range of portfolios and volunteer activities. Capping off a memorable night for the club, Annika Barry, who has previously represented our club as a Junior Lifesaver of the Year took out the Tasmanian U19 segment of this award. Annika was one of our two "junior" Patrol Captains this year, (along with Oliver Thomson) and she also provided invaluable service across a wide cross-section of club activities. Congratulations to them both on doing themselves and USLSC proud.

Trivia Night:

The club's annual Trivia Night has been "run and won" with 15 teams fighting it out at the Club on the 3rd July to earn the title of "Quizmasters." It was the Bruce Beard team which prevailed almost from the outset, with the Simon Eustace team finishing with a wet sail to pip the Chapman outfit for 2nd place. Our visiting Devonport Surf Club team, backing up from last year, took out the "Famous Faces" competition. It was a top night and great to see a full house of eager "scholars" testing their grey matter on a range of subjects.

The night would not have been possible without a great deal of assistance and sponsorship in the form of prize and supper items. Our thanks go to Roydon Taylor of Banjo's for his assistance with supper and gift vouchers, to other prize providers in Sylvia Bell of Bohemian Beauty, Wendy Webb of Manhouse, Vicki Mole, Peter and Debbie Butcher, the Thompson family, Mike Holland and Goodstone. Thank you also to our bar staff in Graeme Rollins, Kerry Lynch and Yonah Duniam, our door people Eloise Crocker and Lisa Beard and a special thanks to our trivia assistants and scorers in Abby Chapman and Lauren Beard who made the night run so smoothly and ensured all disputes were settled with a minimum of fuss. Thanks also to those who assisted with supper preparation and serving, our cleaning helpers and of course to all the participants who came out and supported what is now an annual fixture.
